6TH GRADE MUSIC CLASS
HANDOUTS AND LETTERS HOME
Please check back soon!
Welcome to a new school year! I'm very excited to have you in my class this year! It will be an adventure to have you in my class this year, and I have so many things planned for us.
This year we will focus on American composers including Scott Joplin, John Williams, John Cage, Duke Ellington, and Aaron Copland (their caricatures can be seen to the left). These great American composers wrote music that has become synonymous with American culture, movies, musicals, holidays, and folk songs. We will look into how important events in our nation's history, upbringing, and national landmarks shaped how these men became icons of our musical culture.
I'm looking forward to our journey this year, and hope that you are ready to learn, sing, discover, and have fun!

One of the most important aspects of any elementary school curriculum is literacy. The focus on literacy across the content areas at Southeast has allowed the students to increase fluency in reading and comprehension, which reflects on the standardized test scores.

An important component of a healthy music curriculum is listening to music and responding both emotionally and academically. I aim to choose music that challenges the students to incorporate concepts and terms that we have discussed in class, but also appeals to their aesthetic side.
I have developed an activity which we use to begin each class. This activity is called "free-thought writing" and encourages the students to use "stream of consciousness" writing to express their ideas, imagination, and relatible concepts while promoting literacy. Students are encouraged to chose two to three prompts and continue writing for the duration of the piece, which is no longer than 4 minutes.
Please click on the red title at the top of this box to view the prompts for this activity.
