5TH GRADE MUSIC CLASS

Welcome to your new school for the next two years! I had most of you in class last year at Reilly, and I'm very excited to be able to teach you again this year! It will be an adventure to have you in my class this year, and I have so many things planned for us!
This year we will focus on world music and how different cultures use music in their everyday life and celebrations. We will be listening to, playing , and responding to music from Asia, Africa, and South America. We will learn about different instruments, ceremonies, and traditions throughout the world and how it relates to us and our heritage.
I'm looking forward to our journey this year, and hope that you are ready to learn, sing, discover, and have fun!

November 10th @ 5:30pm - 5th Grade Veterans Day Concert (all students)

One of the most important aspects of any elementary school curriculum is literacy. The focus on literacy across the content areas at Southeast has allowed the students to increase fluency in reading and comprehension, which reflects on the OAA scores.

An important component of a healthy music curriculum is listening to music and responding both emotionally and academically. I aim to choose music that challenges the students to incorporate concepts and terms that we have discussed in class, but also appeals to their aesthetic side.
I have developed an activity which we use to begin each class. This activity is called "free-thought writing" and encourages the students to use "stream of consciousness" writing to express their ideas, imagination, and relatible concepts while promoting literacy. Students are encouraged to chose two to three prompts and continue writing for the duration of the piece, which is no longer than 4 minutes.
Please click on the red title at the top of this box to view the prompts for this activity.
